(Note: as recorded below, this was what Confucius said what he wished to see.  In modern terminology, this was his World View.)

Li Ji (The  Book of Etiquette,  One of the 5 Jing of Confucian texts), Chapter 9, Li Yun (in the fourth volume of the whole book).  These are the first two paragraphs:

Once, Confucius was the guest (one of the participants) of a ceremony at the Dukedom of Lu. After the ceremony, resting by the gate, he sighed deeply.  His student Yan2 Yan4 (also known as Zi Yiu) asked, “Why the sigh?” Confucius said: “I am too late to witness the Grand Harmony (Da Dao) as practice in the great old Kingdom.  However, I wish it can be carried out someday:“

”When the Grand Way (Da Dao) prevails, the whole world under the sky belongs to all people. The virtuous and specially abled are elected.  Honesty and trust are the norm.  Friendliness is practiced. Therefore people not only treat their own loved ones as loved ones; not only treat their own children as children. The elderly are cared for; the able adults are employed; the young ones are properly nourished and educated.  Those who are widowed, orphaned, disabled are all taken care of.  All men and women will have their own place in the society. One would rather leave extra goods out than to hide for oneself; one would not take extra benefit for ones own self interests either.  Therefore there can not be any plot of secret conspiracies; there cannot be any thievery or robbery.  As a result, There is no need of even closing the front gate.  THIS is what Da Tong, the Grand Harmony, is.“
